Lecture series | Chang Han is an entrepreneur, consultant-investor, and professor, specializing in entrepreneurship, startup growth strategy and market entry. He co-founded 3 currently operating businesses in biotech, international trade for sports performance beverages, and electric mountain bikes, and is also an investor and shareholder for several other startups in urban mining, CPG and tech.

Speaker | Robin Coope - Instrumentation Group Leader at Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre at BC Cancer.

Lecture series | Robin Coope PhD PEng, is the Group Leader for Instrumentation at the BC Cancer Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre. He has over 25 years of experience in prototyping and early product development. His current work is centered around automated sample handling for genomics and other biomedical assays, as well as medical device projects in orthopaedic trauma and radiation oncology. He also mentors many biomedical engineering students in designing devices and apparatus destined for manufacture at BC Cancer's Joint Engineering Centre. Dr. Coope holds nine patents and two spin-off companies have emerged from the GSC's Instrumentation Group since 2012.

Speaker | Cynthia Shippman - Industrial Technology Advisor at National Research Council Canada.

Lecture series | Learn the basics about intellectual property including associated costs, why you need it and why it's important. Learn how to properly read, understand and "go-around" the patent claims. Cynthia, Avigilon's Intellectual Property Manager, brings over 20 years of experience in innovation management, intellectual property strategy, and research. Prior to her role at Avigilon in 2015, she served as an in-house patent agent at SWITCH Materials, UBC's University-Industry Liaison Office, and Gowlings law firm. Cynthia's contributions at UBC led to the founding of several spinoff companies, and she is a recognized IP Discussion Leader, speaker, and Canadian and US-registered Patent Agent.
